Request identity number:

Applies to:

S00200, S00201, S00202, S00203, S00204, S01408, S01409, S01410

Type of request:

Technical modification

Request status level:

Resolved

Proposal:

The following modifications to symbols relating to earthing are proposed:

S00200 "Earth, general symbol; Ground, general symbol": Change the name of the symbol to "Earth, general symbol; Earthing, general symbol; Ground (US), general symbol; Grounding (US), general symbol". Add a remark: "For the definition of "earth", see IEV 195-02-03".

S00201 "Noiseless earth; Noiseless ground": Withdraw this symbol and replace by symbol S01408 "Functional earthing", with the same graphics. (The concepts are not identical even if the graphical symbols are. Withdrawal and replacement is a way to keep the old meaning of the symbol in the database for information.)

S00202 "Protective earth; Protective ground": Change the name of the symbol to "Protective earthing; Protective grounding (US)". Add usage: "Protective earthing conductor; Protective earthing terminal; Protective grounding conductor (US); Protective grounding terminal (US)". Add function class: X and W. The link to aplication note is to A0052 to be deleted. (Deletion of this link is also suggested in the Task II work.) Add a remark: "For the definition of "protective earthing", see IEV 195-01-11".

S00203 "Frame; Chassis": Withdraw this symbol and replace by S01409 "Functional equipotential bonding" and S01410 "Functional equipotential bonding/simplified form".(The reason for witdrawal/replacement the same as above, but in addition the simplification is more easily treated as a separate symbol.) The link to application note A0053 to be deleted.

S00204 "Equipotentiality": Change the name of the symbol to "Protective equipotential bonding". Add usage: "Protective bonding conductor; Protective bonding terminal". Add function classes: X and W. Add a remark: "For the definition of "protective equipotential bonding", see IEV 195-01-15".

Reason:

The terminology with regard to earthing and equipotentiality have been modified by TC1 and TC16. The terminology used in this change request corresponds to IEC 60050-195 (1998).

The proposed changes to the symbols are consequences of these approved and published changes.

Conclusions by the Secretary: The Change Request has been approved and the changes will be implemented.
Regarding the comment from JP that all symbols should have the same (application?) class, S00202, S01408, S01409 are now usable for all applications. For S00200 it is qualifier only, since this symbol is now a kind of basic "help symbol", in all "real" application cases the other symbols are to be used. For S01410 I have omitted the use as qualifier, since I think that the simplified form in such an application could easily be misinterpreted.
