Proposal:

This is part of the Task II proposal for IEC 60617-5.

The proposal is to withdraw all symbls from Chapter II Electron tubes and Chapter III Electrochemical devices, in all 103 symbols.

Reason:

These symbols have very limited use today, as most of them represent an obsolete technology. The original propsal is attached as "C00067 propsal" below.

Comments at evaluation:

Submitted for evaluation 2001-09-10. Closing for evaluation 2001-10-12.

JP(HYAM): The CRTs , those are electron tubes, are still used commonly. This fact shows us Chapter II should not be withdrawn. For the Chapter III, I do not know those use today. But it should be investigated.

Secretary's comment: Yes, I agreee that the withdrawal of the symbols probably need to be more selective than originally proposed by Task II. A lot of the symbols are indeed obsolete, but others are not. How to make the selection? We might have difficulties to find broad enough competence today in the National Committees. One way might be to look at the examples: which of these might occur today in new designs, (e.g. CRT, X-ray) and then keep those examples and all the symbols applied in them, but withdraw the rest. (And we should remember that even if they symbols are withdrawn they are still accessible in the database.) I will bring up this topic at the TC3 meeting in Oslo to see if we can get some guidance.

DE(RESC): The tube-technology is still in use, so the symbols can not be deleted in general. It might be a solution to keep the "basic symbols" in the actual standard and change the examples to the status "withdrawn".

NL(MIBO): OK, keep the basic symbols.

AT(WGAS): I agree to the withdrawal.

DK(KATH): Keep the basic symbols, and some others if necessary.

Conclusion by the Secretary: based on the comments above and on the discussion of this CR at the TC3 meeting in Oslo (see the day report) a more detailed proposal will be prepared for circulation to the National Committees.

Comments by the Secretary 2002-10-23: Document 3/610/DC was circulated for comments to the National Committees. The comments on this document are collected in document 3/641/INF. (Both documents are attached below.)

The proposal was generally found acceptable and discussed at the meeting in Prague 2002. The meeting therefore decided that the proposal in 3/610/DC should be implemented without further validation.
